Externally, this class differed little from the Restigouche class destroyer, Internally, they had a Communications Control Room (CCR) on-build. It replaced the Message Centre, Radio 1 and Radio 3 in the preceding classes. The CCR occupied the same space and included most of the equipment previously distributed in other compartments in the Restigouche and St. Laurent classes.
There is evidence to show that at some point CCRs were fitted to the St. Laurent class but the date is unknown. One unique fitting was the piano in the Wardroom during the 1973-74 period. Major Tony Hawkins, a ‘liaison officer’ on a West PAC training cruise made very good use of it while teaching young Officers bawdy WWII songs. Ships fitted with Wardroom pianos in the 1970s eventually had them removed in order to create more settee space in the Wardroom.
